Blackley Fire Station site start

It's great to see progress on Blackley Fire Station with a start on site at the beginning of 2024 and the commitment to sustainability and environmental considerations that the Station demonstrates. The embedding of BREEAM Excellent and Net Zero Carbon demonstrates a determination from GMF&RS & GMCA to create facilities that not only meet the operational needs of the Fire & Rescue Service but also align with modern standards of eco-friendly construction delivery.

The challenges faced, such as adjacent development sensitivities, existing station basement and challenging topographical considerations, highlight the complexity of the project. It's commendable that the design team, led by Bradshaw Gass & Hope LLP and supported by various specialists including Appleton’s (landscape architecture) and Harley Haddow (M&E Services consultant), has successfully addressed these challenges.

The North West Construction Hub Framework was used as the contractor procurement vehicle, resulting in the selection of ISG Construction Ltd as the principal contractor through a design and build contracting arrangement.  There demonstrable capability in the delivery of fire service facilities complimented Bradshaw Gass & Hope LLP’s expertise in this sector.

The emphasis on creating an all-electric facility, incorporating features like EV charging, roof-mounted PVs, green roofs, ASHPs, SUDs drainage, enhanced thermal insulation and building airtightness, demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to sustainability. The focus on creating a fabric-first net-zero station aligns with current trends in environmentally conscious construction.

A well-coordinated and innovative project that not only meets the immediate and future needs of the fire service but also contributes to a more sustainable and resilient future was the aim and has been achieved.
